Early start – 6am rising to be at the Mansion House with the Chief Minister and Officer support team for a meeting with Lord Mayor Andrew Parmley, a very constructive meeting and good contact.
Back to Portcullis House Westminster for a series of meetings with MPs and Lords from all political persuasions including Hilary Benn.
Lunch hosted by Bob Neill, Chairman of the House of Commons Justice Select Committee, who was on the Island a few weeks ago.
Meeting with Sir Oliver Heald QC MP Minister of State at the Ministry of Justice who has responsibility for the conduct of Crown Dependency business in Whitehall.
Then the main order of the business for the day, the United Kingdom Isle of Man All Parliamentary Group meeting hosted by Chairman Andrew Rosindell MP. It was apparently the best attended meeting that the Chair could remember with over 18 peers and MPs at one stage, although the peers had to leave for a short while when there was a division bell. The Chief Minister gave an overview of matters, particularly Brexit, from an Isle of Man perspective. I gave a briefing and answered questions in particular about the environment, food and agriculture of the Isle of Man.
On to House of Lords where we hosted a dinner for 12 with an eclectic mix including Deidre Brock MP, David Morris MP, Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne, Richard Arkless MP and other peers.
Finally back at the hotel at around 11.30pm. A long day but I have to say very fruitful in terms of reaching out to Westminster and beyond. I used to criticise previous administrations but I am pleased to say that under Chief Minister Quayle’s leadership we are making essential connections and raising awareness of who we are culturally and financially. Along with the other crown dependencies we hope that our requirements for the future in political terms post Brexit will be taken into consideration.
